Examples of MOSH/MOAH migration into food

In 2010, the Food Safety Authority of the Canton of Zürich in Switzerland made a study of 102 different dry foods in paperboard packaging sold in Italy and Switzerland, and 119 different foods in paperboard packaging in Germany.

Concentrations of mineral oils measured in the packaged food were often 10 times higher than the current ADI (allowed daily intake) limits.

In several cases, the measured amounts were more than 100 times higher than the allowed limit.

The risk of MOSH/MOAH migration


Absorption by rice of MOSH/MOAH from the paperboard packaging.

In one case of packaged rice, measurements were made after an 8-month shelf life.  Despite only including MOSH of <C28, a measured value 15.4 mg of MOSH was found for every 1kg of packaged rice.

The maximum ADI (average daily intake) of mineral oils (MOSH, molecular weight <480)  is <0.01 mg/kg of body weight.  This means that a 60kg person eating a 100g portion of this rice would have ingested more than 2.5x the currently allowed ADI, where 15.4mg/60/10=0.0226mg/kg body weight.

Perhaps most troubling, MOAH comprised 23-26% of the total sum of MOSH/MOAH material that had actually migrated.
